Jarisch Herxheimer reactions are usually not life-threatening.

Prednisone is also used for the treatment of the Herxheimer reaction, which is common during the treatment of syphilis.

Initially, antibiotics may cause a worsening of symptoms ( the Herxheimer reaction ), as spirochaetes are destroyed, which in part supports the diagnosis.

As with antibiotic therapy and other methods of countering bacterial infections, endotoxins are released by the bacteria as they are destroyed within the patient ( Herxheimer reaction ).

These can, however, induce a Jarisch Herxheimer reaction in over half those treated, producing anxiety, diaphoresis, fever, tachycardia and tachypnea with an initial pressor response followed rapidly by hypotension.
